Question:

Febreeze & Birds?

by  |  earlier

Growing up my parents raised and bred birds- everything from COckateils to Macaws to Cockatoos and African Grey's. I Never have heard that Febreeze was harmful (deadly) to birds- but then again, I don't believe the stuff was around then!

My grandmother has two Paralites (?) and she completely comvinced that you cannot spray febreeze in the house with birds living inside or it will kill them.

Is she right? Half correct? Off the rocker?

  1. Febreze is deadly to your birds....

"Birds may be at risk, since they are highly sensitive to many airborne chemicals. Febreze should not be used in a room housing pet birds." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Febreze

  2. I will not use anything like that in my house with birds around.

Aerosol cans of anything are harmful to birds.

  3. Absolutely, positively NEVER spray anything around your birds. Don't even burn scented candles or incense. This is probably the number one cause of illness and premature death in birds -- people are ignorant of the fact that birds have sensitive respiratory systems and indoor air pollution (yes, scented candles actually POLLUTE the air) can KILL them.

  4. It can make them ill.  It can cause problems with the respiratory system.  It is not advisable to spray around them.  Respiratory problems can be very serious.   It won't kill them when you spray it, but if they get enough of it in their system, it can definitely cause problems.  Please read my profile

  5. i don't use chemicals around my animals.

  6. I have birds, and as long as the febreeze isn't actually being sprayed directly at the bird then it doesn't hurt them.  Just don't spray it directly at the bird.

  7. She's right, air fresheners are very harmful to birds and shouldn't be used around them. Birds have very sensitive respiratory systems--even nonstick cookware can be deadly for them.
