Fed Biz off the Derby trail due to a hind end issue
The 3-yeae-old colt, Fed Biz, was considered to be Bob Baffert’s Derby horse last month, when Kaleem Shah’s Fed Biz demolished an allowance/optional claimer field over at Santa Anita Park’s fast dirt track over a distance of 1 mile on 9 February, 2012, when
he defeated Consulado in second and Blueskiesnrainbows in third, while the rampant colt romped to victory in 1 minute and 34.74 seconds.
February seems so far away after Bob Baffert pulled, Fed Biz, off of the Kentucky Derby trail due to a hind-end issue, and the colt will be given some time off, which means no Triple Crown for one of Baffert’s promising runner.
The Kentucky bred is the son of super sire Giant’s Causeway, and out of mare Spunoutacontrol by Wild Again. Fed Biz was bought by Kaleem Shah for $950,000 at the Keeneland September yearling sale.
“We just know it’s the hind end,” Shah said. “Not one of the vets can accurately tell us what the problem is. We are going to give him some time off, which usually resolves all issues. We do know there is no fracture, tear, or anything that shows up in nuclear
scans. He is off just a bit and (trainer) Bob (Baffert) did not want to take a chance. It’s a tough break.”
In his juvenile season, Fed Biz was asked to go over a distance of 6 furlongs in his debut race at Hollywood Park’s cushion track, but the 3-year-old colt failed to do so, as he came short on 27 November, 2011, and finished fourth to winner Macho Rocket.
His next maiden special weight race came a month later on 30 December, 2011, where he was asked to do a little more than his previous race. Stretched out in distance to 1 mile, Fed Biz responded in style as he posted his first win over Zackn’mat by 1 ¾ lengths
at Santa Anita Park’s dirt course, covering the distance in 1 minute and 35.48 seconds.
His next target was a $58,000 allowance/optional claimer, which was also his 2012 debut at Santa Anita’s dirt course. Fed Biz came out of the race successful after a dominant performance where he defeated the runner-up, Consulado, by a massive margin of
5 ¾ lengths.
He was believed to be tied up way before because that was the reason he got scratched from a scheduled race, the Grade 2 San Felipe Stakes.
