FedEx Cup: it is now show time
It all started with 125 players, who took the field at Bethpage. Nick Watney emerged victorious at The Barclays from nowhere. Then it was Rory McIlroy’s time, as he blitzed to victory at the Deutsche Bank Open.
At the BMW Championship, only the top 70 players on the PGA Tour took the field. Once again, it was the man in form, Rory McIlroy, who emerged victorious.
After the three playoffs, Rory McIlroy is on the top of the standings, followed by Tiger Woods. Nick Watney, Phil Mickelson and Brandt Snedeker are the other three that make up the top-five respectively.
After the two victories in the playoffs for the current PGA Championship, the Tour Championship would have been meaningless.
However, after the rule that was changed last year, anybody in the top-5 can go on to win the FedEx Cup with a victory at the Tour Championship.
Rory McIlroy is still the favourite to win the Tour Championship but it will not be easy, as he will be up against the likes of Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, Nick Watney and Brandt Snedeker.
However, there is one disadvantage that Rory McIlroy will have to suffer, and that is, he will be playing at the East Lake for the first time.
“It'll be my first trip to East Lake, so it'll be a new golf course for me,” said McIlroy, who finished his round with a 67 at Crooked Stick and bagged the trophy by a margin of two strokes.
“But that's what the FedEx Cup Playoffs were designed for, to have the best players playing at this time of the year and to make it exciting”.
Phil Mickelson seems to have found the form at the right time. With Tour Championship and Ryder Cup next up, it seems that Lefty is geared up properly. Lefty is the only player, currently, who has played in all six of the FedEx Cup playoffs.
"I'm really pleased with the way my game has come around the last two weeks," Mickelson said.
Nick Watney said that he ran out of gas at the Crooked Stick but with a week’s break before the Tour Championship, he will have time to recover for the final showdown.
Tiger Woods has been a previous two-time winner of the FedEx Cup but this will be his first time playing in the new format. So let’s see how he goes about things.
