FedEx Cup system confusing, not fair says Tiger Woods
Tiger Woods has finally come out and criticised the FedEx Cup scoring system. The former world number one said that the current system designed to chose the FedEx Cup winner is confusing and unfair.
These are not just the feelings of Tiger Woods, but this opinion has been voiced from various quarters.
Presently, the Tour Championship winner takes home the purse of $10 million and the FedEx Cup, irrespective of his points and performances throughout the season.
In an ideal case, although it is highly unlikely that such a thing would happen, if a player won throughout the season, even in the playoffs, and then if he did not win the Tour Championship, he would not win the FedEx Cup.
This is quite unfair and the authorities should look in to it. They should give it a thought at least.
“I don’t think that’s quite fair,” he said in a pre-tournament news conference at East Lake GC, in Atlanta, “but that is our current system,” said Woods.
This new system was introduced to keep the interest of fans and players in the Tour Championship but this idea is not suiting many players.
“They’re trying to put more of an emphasis on the Tour Championship and what it would mean,” Woods said, “instead of the cumulative total that you’ve done for the whole year”.
This new format clearly dents the chances of players such as Rory McIlroy. His back to back victories in the playoffs would have been enough for him to wrap up the FedEx Cup. However, he still has to play for everything at East Lake.
Rory McIlroy is not making any fuss about it, although he is the one who is affected by this new format. However, being a professional golfer, his focus is on the big task which is to win at East Lake.
“Look, it obviously still makes it exciting going into the last event. It would be nice to have it wrapped up, but it’s just the way it is. I’m not going to complain about it or I’m not going to moan about it,” said the current world number one.
