FedEx St. Jude Classic faces lack of attendance by big names again
The PGA Tour’s FedEx St. Jude Classic is about to begin at the TPC Southwind, offering a last chance for the players to make preparations for the US Open, scheduled next week.
It has always been the case that the pre-US Open event always suffers lack of attendance by the top-notch players from all over the world.
This year, the tournament is once again underrated and most of the players preferred to stay out of the course in order to get maximum rest prior to the start of the second major event of the year.
However, it still managed to attract a few players who desperately needed to return back to form before moving to Olympic Club.
One of the names includes Rory McIlroy, who missed the cut in each of the last three tournaments that he played.
Therefore, he added St. Jude Classic to his schedule in order to get back to the form that earned him the top spot in the Official World Golf Rankings this year.
In the meantime, Zach Johnson is looking forward to maintain his momentum that he gained in the last four tournaments.
Johnson recorded two second-place finishes at the RBC Heritage and The Players Championship, prior to earning his first victory in two years at the Crowne Plaza Invitational at Colonial.
Thereafter, he skipped the Memorial Tournament at Muirfield Village and decided to return back to action at TPC Southwind.
He believes that the tournament will allow him to give a final touch to his game in preparations for the major event.
These are the only two players who are currently listed in the top-10 of the FedExCup standings, PGA Tour money list or the Official World Golf Rankings.
Apart from that, the field does not showcase the quality that can be considered elite on the PGA Tour.
Yet, a good thing about the field is that it includes the confirmation by the eight past winners of the tournament, especially by the two-time winners, Justin Leonard and David Toms.
Moreover, there are a total of 13 past major winners participating in the event this year. The tournament will officially begin on Thursday, June 7, 2012.
