My child is in Head Start. I went to the parent meeting, and was asked if I wanted to run for Policy Council, essentially their version of the school board. but, because I AM NOT THE CUSTODIAL parent of my child, I am excluded from running by the FEDERAL goverment. Is this not discrimination. And no, I did not LOSE my kids, it was an agreement between my ex and I due to school zoning etc. Is there anything I can do?

  1. it may be discrimination, but probably not illegal... the law only bans discrimination on the basis of race, creed, color, or national origin.  Other discrimination is perfectly legal.

  2. I don't know if the law would consider this discrimination or not and it would probably cost a lot of money to find out. It is true that the federal, state and local governments discriminate all the time though. They also force business and citizens to do it too. They do it through all their diversity, EOE and other laws. If they aren't going to discriminate then why is it necessary to continually ask what your race, s*x etc. is? You can't fill out a government form that doesn't ask these questions. Its true that you aren't required to answer them but I've heard of many cases where if you don't (say its a job application) and get called for a second interview they will, without asking your permission, take your picture and attatch it to your paperwork. Then they can determine your s*x, approx. age race etc. They tell us that this is so they can get a group of employees, scholarship recipients etc that "reflects society". BS. If your trying to hire someone or give a scholarship or what ever, you want the most qualified applicants to get the reward based on their qualifications and nothing else. If you have a g*y bar for instance should you be forced to hire straight bartenders? If you have a marriage counseling business in a Jewish neighborhood should you be forced to hire a Muslim so you can demonstrate your "diversity"? I think you would only demonstrate that you are an idiot that won't be in business long. Its interesting that congress has seen fit to pass these laws that apply to us but for example EOE doesn't apply to them. They can hire nothing but KKK members if they so choose. They could hire all women if they wanted to and would be perfectly within the law. Personally I think that if you have a business there should be no law stipulating that you must have a certain percentage of employees belonging to any group or reflecting any part of society at all. According to the constitution we have freedom of association and the right to contract anything legal with anybody. It says NOTHING about forcing black to associate with white or a Christian having to hire g*y Sunday school teachers. I think if you want to participate in your child's education you should be able to in any way you and possibly their other parent thinks is best under the circumstances present at the time.
