Federal Financial Aid??? How??

I've already filled out the FAFSA, and scored a 548. My score sheet said I was eligible for several grants and loans, but I can't figure out how to get one. Everywhere I look people just say all you have to do it fill out a FAFSA. But what do you do after that? Are you supposed to get a letter in the mail that gives you more instructions on recieving the grant, or what? I'm so lost, and so confused, and it's been a tough summer trying to get all this stuff figured out cuz my high school lost my transcript, and all kinds of other junk happened. Anyways. Any help? Thanks!

  1. The colleges that you told FAFSA to send your report to will get it and put together a financial aide package for you.  This will include federal and local financial aide that you are eligible for.  Once you receive this and decide what you want to use then you fill out the forms.  It is very overwhelming, but once you get over this hump you'll do wonderfully.

  2. I would suggest contacting the Financial Aid office at your school, they can help you figure out what you need to do.

  3. After you file your fafsa you contact your schools financial aid office and turn in any documentation they request of you.  After your financial aid file is complete, they will issue you an "Award Letter" with exact amounts of grants, loans, work study, and scholarships you are being offered.   You will be given the option to either "Accept" or "Deny" each line item.  If it says grant, choose Accept, if you see loan you will need to see if your grants alone will cover all your tuition and books and fees before you resort to this.

If you decide you want loans, the school will give you a promissory note to sign and give back to them.
