when I applied online on the federal student aid website did I automatically get signed up to receive a pell grant? when should i know if i received it ?

First of all, it takes at least two weeks for the school to receive the application.  You would need to contact the fin aid office and ask them what your EFC (estimated family contribution) number is and if it was over the bracket in order to receive the pell grant.  The EFC is a complication calculation completed by the US Dept of Education.  That will determine whether or not you get the pell grant.  But if you don't you should at least qualify for a subsidized loan (the government pays for the interest while you're in school).
