Question:

Federal government drug testing guidelines?

I am a recent college graduate and I am thinking about applying for positions in the federal government. I've smoked marijuana within the last few weeks and have since quit in order to pass any pre-employment testing. What sort of tests are typically done to federal employees for positions where safety isn't critical (such as air traffic controllers or truck drivers)? Urine, hair, saliva? What are the cutoff concentrations? Does the federal government typically conduct random drug tests after employment?

  1. Depends upon the agency, background checks, and if you need clearance.  It's not just safety, it's access to records and information that will trigger security checks.  If so, some positions will require a lie detector test.  Suggestion: stop doing drugs...it remains in hair samples for a very long time.  Background checks go back 10 years.  (former US FED/DC/ psychologist)

  2. some agencies are not drug testing agencies. Cant really you which agencies are and are not because i only know of a few that do not test, but normally it will state in the job posting if the agency requires a drug test  or if the agency does random drug testing.
