  1. TANF - rather than type it all up, you can get much info if you Google it.

  2. If you live in the US…  To be considered for federal grants, she has to fill out a FAFSA, which she can do on-line (she needs to google it).  Whether or not you receive funds/how much you receive is based on your income (or your parents income if you’re considered their dependant—and in the case of my child, he received a big fat ZERO in assistant).  The process takes times.  It’s not going to happen in a week, and I imagine she’s missed the deadline to apply for grants for the fall semester, but she can likely still apply for the spring semester.  Grants are to cover educational expenses, and rarely even cover all of them.  If she’s having trouble with living expenses, she needs to apply for state assistance.

If Mom is extremely depressed, she needs to get assistance for that, because the likelihood of her being successful in school while suffering from extreme depression is low.  And if her GPA falls too low, she won't be awarded future grants.

  3. Go to school's financial aid office they will be more than happy to help you. They'll bust their rears to get you every cent they can. That's their jobs.
