Roger Federer/Stanislas Wawrinka destroy Max Mirnyi/Daniel Nestor at BNP Paribas Open 2011
The super swiss duo of Roger Federer and Stanislas Wawrinka decimated the second seeded pair of Max Mirnyi and Daniel Nestor 6-1, 6-2 in the first round of the BNP Paribas Open, 2011 today.
In the first round of the tournament, Federer and Wawrinka caused a technical upset, but the Olympic Gold medalists were always in the running to win the match, despite being unranked as a doubles team.
The BNP Paribas Open is the first ATP Masters 1000 event of the year, and in a surprise decision, the World no. 2 Roger Federer teamed up with his frequent practice partner and compatriot Stanislas Wawrinka, World no. 14 to participate in the doubles. Both
players generally tend to focus on Singles competitions, but in a treat for the fans here, took on the highly rated team of Miryni, Doubles World no. 6, and Nestor, Doubles World no. 3.
The match started off with the Swiss duo dominating. Both Federer and Wawrinka are known to be excellent servers, and they utilised their talent well, landing in 75 per cent of their first serves. While their opponents, with 72 per cent, were not far behind,
the super team were also much better at converting serves into points. They won 80 per cent of their first serve points and 80 per cent of their second serve points, and allowed their opponents no space at all on the return. While receiving, they completely
crippled Mirnyi/Nestor's second serve, and took a whopping 80 per cent points off of it to create 6 break points for themselves. 4 of these 6 they converted to easily take the set 6-1.
The second set saw more of the same. Federer and Wawrinka delivered 62 per cent of their first serves correctly, and while their opponents bettered them this time by 2 per cent, they still won 92 per cent of the points on their first serves. Completing the
dominance, they once again trounced their opponents' second serves and took 67 per cent of the points on it. Again, the result was a plethora of break points, 5 in all, out of which they converted three. Soon enough, the score became 6-1, 6-2, and the match
went to Federer/Wawrinka.
In the next round, the duo will face either the French pairing of Julien Benneteau and Richard Gasquet, or Philipp Kohlschreiber and Kevin Anderson.
