Roger Federer has done what was both required and expected in his opening match against Peter Luczak at the French Open, defeating the Australian 6-4, 6-1, 6-2 on Court Philippe Chatrier.

The defending champion hit 34 winners and made just 11 unforced errors on his way through to the second round and a meeting with Columbia’s Alejandro Falla.

Federer, thanks to qualifier and world No. 166 Julian Reister’s first round defeat of 27th seed Feliciano Lopez, is now assured of an unseeded opponent in each of his next two matches, provided Falla does not pull off an upset that would just about eclipse Robin Soderling’s defeat of Rafael Nadal in Paris last year.
