Federer and Djokovic through on French Open day two

Roger Federer has done what was both required and expected in his opening match against Peter Luczak at the French Open, defeating the Australian 6-4, 6-1, 6-2 on Court Philippe Chatrier.

The defending champion hit 34 winners and made just 11 unforced errors on his way through to the second round and a meeting with Columbia’s Alejandro Falla.

Federer, thanks to qualifier and world No. 166 Julian Reister’s first round defeat of 27th seed Feliciano Lopez, is now assured of an unseeded opponent in each of his next two matches, provided Falla does not pull off an upset that would just about eclipse Robin Soderling’s defeat of Rafael Nadal in Paris last year.

Third seed Novak Djokovic joins Federer in the second round after a four set victory over Evgeny Korolev on Court Suzanne Lenglen. The Serb dropped the second set, during which he produced nine of what would be a total of 21 unforced errors for the match, before regrouping to claim a 6-1, 3-6, 6-1, 6-3 victory.

John Isner, whose tennis career is starting to reach the heights befitting his 6ft 9in stature, opened with a straight sets win over the unseeded Andrey Golubev in the first round, in just his second appearance at Roland Garros.

The big-serving American may not hail from a country where clay court tennis comes naturally to its players, but his runner-up performance at the Serbia Open in Belgrade this month (where he defeated Richard Gasquet and Stanislas Wawrinka en route to the final) indicates this might be the first of several wins for 17th seed at Roland Garros.

Other players to advance to the second round on day two in Paris included 20th seed Wawrinka, 15th seeded Czech Tomas Berdych and 25th seed Marcos Baghdatis.
