  1. No, but the gap is closing..  and Federer has a lot more points to defend during the US hard court season compared to Nadal.

    1st Federer , R.  6600

    2nd Nadal , R.  6055

  2. Nope

Nadal gained a few points, but Federer only lost a few.

Nadal has had a good year so far, but is still more than 1100 points behind Federer.

My Guess?  Federer will keep the #1 ranking for the rest of the year.

  3. i cant believe he beat federer because nadal likes clay and federer was on his home court that is grass.

  4. Nope. This is because Federer still have more ranking points than Nadal in ATP ranking but the advantage has cut down from 1145 points to 545 points(Federer 6600 points, Nadal 6055 points).  Federer now is in danger of losing the World no.1 ranking he held since February 2004.  He has more points to defend compare to Nadal and Djokovic.  If he gets bad result in the upcoming hard court season he might lose his number one ranking to either Nadal or Djokovic especially Nadal.

  5. federer is no.1

  6. The rankings are based on the past 12 months. If it was  based on the past 2 months, obviously Nadal would be number 1. So Nadal has to make an impact on the hard court season to get to number 1.

This situation is just like 1989 when Boris Becker was dominating at WImbledon, while Lendl was playing well everywhere. Everyone unofficially considered Becker the number 1, but officially it was still Lendl.

  7. No Federer is still the #1 because he leads Nadal by certain points

  8. federer is still number one. he was winning for a while so when nadal won nadal gained only a little and federer lost only a little.

    GO FEDERER!!!!!!!

  9. Yeah, the rankings are a technicality.  We all know that Nadal is the best player in the world right now.  Federer is going to have to lose in the early rounds of a major for Nadal to become the new number 1.

  10. There's no easy answer... Tennis is not like boxing :-)

Officially, there are two systems to judge who is world number 1...

    1) ATP (Entry System...)

Here, Roger is still the number one.

Roger had advantage over Rafa of 1.145 ATP points, but now (published this Monday) his advantage has gone down to 545 points, so Rafa has gained 600 points on Roger.

On the one hand, that's because the winner earns more points than the runner-up, that's logical. But on the other hand, that's because this year's results are compared to last year's results... So Roger who WON the final last year and LOST the final this year, did "worse" this year compare to last year, so he lost extra points for that... And Rafa did BETTER this year than last year, so he earns extra points for that two (it's something like a moving annual total). So that means that IF last year's winner goes out during round one of the next year, he looses points, where as a qualifier who reaches the first round for the first time and then looses, still wins a lot of points...

So, to refer to other answers: it is NOT likely not certain that Federer will stay number 1 until the end of the year... That's mainly because last year, he won the US OPEN. But Rafa on the other hand, only reached the 4th round in 2007. So if they would for instance both loose in the Semi Final, then that would probably be enough for Nadal (semi is better than 2007) to become number 1 over Federer (because semi is worse than last year). So Federer has more points "to defend", so to speak, so he can loose more (talk about the pressure of being and STAYING number 1...).

    2) CHAMPIONS RACE

This ranking only looks at your achievements in the current year (so it doesn't take previous years into account), and every year starts at zero points... Here, Nadal was already number 1 (having won almost all gravel tournaments including Roland Garros) and Federer number 2. Rafa is now a bit stronger leader, with 955 points over Federer's 685 points and Djokovic's 649 points.

So far for the official stuff. Now, if you ask me, AT PRESENT Nadal is the best tennis player in the world, having won, in one month time, "a major" on both the slowest surface (gravel) and the fastest surface (grass), an achievement last made by... Bjorn Borg in 1980.

  11. For now it's still Federer. You have to remember that although Nadal won the final's, Federer was runner up of both of them. So Nadal has had a bigger increase in points, but Federer has also increased his points, though not as much as Nadal. Consequently, they've both gained, but Nadal has gained more than Federer, which means the gap between them has closed big time. We'll see what happens in the hard court tournaments as they will determine who's in better form, thus illustrating who deserves the number 1 spot.

  12. for now nadal is still No. 2

  13. Nadal is second to Federer in the 52-week ranking 6055 to 6600 points.  In the race Nadal is ahead right now 955 to 685 points.  So in 2008 alone, Nadal is the better player, but going back to last summer Federer still has an edge.

As Boris Becker said though, “Whoever wins the French Open and Wimbledon in the same year for me is the number one in the world,” “The computer just didn’t get it yet.”

  14. Hey Federer will Answer your question in US Open.

Nadal is in good form now. We will see whether he will maintain his form atleast 1 year. Then we will know who is the best.

    So Federer is always #1.

  15. Dude beat a guy once you won't be number 1, or twice, you have to beat them several times.  Federer has won tournaments several times in a row, and nadal is starting to do that, to bad he be tired, but he gets like a 3-5 day break foos.

  16. Nadal is still No. 2.
