It’s why we watch tennis – to see two champion players making extraordinary shots. At the US Open last year, Roger Federer hit a cold winner through his legs while facing the back of the court to leave Novak Djokovic with little option other than to acknowledge his opponent’s brilliance. But at the Australian Open 2010, Nadal produced something pretty special when he curled the ball around the net and back into the court to win the point against Philipp Kohlschreiber.
Which is better? They both rightly belong on the highlight reels, but Federer’s party trick not just to remain in the point when he was on the run but to win it – and without looking at where the shot was headed – impressed even the 15-time Grand Slam champion himself. So on that ground, it wins.
