Federica Pellegrini captures Women’s 200m freestyle gold: Day four – 2011 FINA World Championships
Federica Pellegrini of Italy emerged as the most dominant swimmer of the Women’s 200m freestyle on day four of the 2011 World Championships organised by Federation Internationale de Natation (FINA) on Wednesday, July 27, in Shanghai, China.
Pellegrini pocketed the gold medal of the event, by posting a wonderful time of 1 minute and 55.58 seconds. Her time was only 2.60 seconds above the championship and world mark of 1 minute and 52.98 seconds, set by Pellegrini at the 2009 Rome World Championships.
She was followed by Kylie Palmer of Australia, who stayed only 0.46 second behind the gold medallist and clinched the silver medal of the event, by reporting a stupendous time of 1 minute and 56.04 seconds. She was followed by Camille Muffat of France, who
occupied third position of the event, by staying only 0.06 seconds behind her former finisher and producing a fine time of 1 minute and 56.10 seconds.
Sarah Sjoestroem of Sweden was the fourth best swimmer of the four-lap race, as she was just 0.31 seconds behind Muffat and concluded her swim in a time of 1 minute and 56.41 seconds. Sjoestroem was trailed by her closest competitor and Palmer’s team-member,
Bronte Barratt, who finished her swim behind Sjoestroem with a difference of 1.19 seconds and posted a time of 1 minute and 56.60 seconds.
In the mean-time, Allison Schmitt of USA followed her on the concluding wall, by finishing her swim in a time of 1 minute and 56.98 seconds. Femke Heemskerk of Netherlands was the seventh best finisher of the freestyle event, as she clocked a time of 1 minute
and 57.63 seconds. Silke Lippok of Germany was the last swimmer to wind up her swim, as she secured the eighth position of the respective meet in a finishing time of 1 minute and 58.26 seconds.
In addition, the crowd admired the stunning efforts of the Italian swimmer, while the winners collected awards and accolades for their furious swims in the 200m event after the completion of the session.
