Federica Pellegrini claims Women's 200m freestyle gold medal – 2011 Italian Grand Prix
Federica Pellegrini of Italy claimed the title of Women's 200m freestyle at the 2011 Italian Grand Prix on Saturday, November 19.
The 23-year-old Pellegrini remained dominant over her competitors from the start of the race. With her fastest dive and strong dolphin kicks, she earned a considerable lead over opponents, completing her first round of the race in a time of 27.76 seconds.  
Pellegrini was followed by Alice Nesti, who was 0.87 seconds slower than her and completed her first 50 meters of the race in a time of 28.63 seconds. She was trailed by Martina De Memme, who remained 0.27 seconds behind her and ended her initial round in a time of 28.90 seconds.
In the next round, Pellegrini enhanced her pace and dictated terms to her competitors, completing her initial half in a time of 56.59 seconds. Nesti and De Memme remained second and third fastest swimmers in the second round as they ended their initial halves in a time of 58.99 and 59.17 seconds, respectively.
The 23-year-old continued her dominance in the third round, where she clocked a time of 29.41 seconds to post 1 minute and 26.00 seconds on the board. She remained 3.39 seconds ahead of her subsequent swimmer, Nesti, who ended her third round in a time of 30.40 seconds to submit 1 minute and 29.39 seconds.
The third fastest spot was sustained by 20-year-old De Memme, who remained just half a stroke away from her preceding swimmer and finished her round in a time of 30.57 seconds to register 1 minute and 29.74 seconds on the bulletin.
In the meantime, Pellegrini defeated her rivals with an effort of 29.32 seconds to submit 1 minute and 55.32 seconds for gold medal. She was trailed by De Memme, who out-touched her competitor on the finishing end and produced an effort of 1 minute and 59.57 seconds for silver medal.
Nesti remained 0.01 seconds behind and clocked a time of 1 minute and 59.58 seconds for bronze medal.
In addition, winners received medals for their laudable efforts in the 200m freestyle after the completion of session.
