Federica Pellegrini conquers Women’s 400m freestyle crown: Day one - 2011 FINA World Championships
Italy’s Federica Pellegrini put up a stunning performance as she clinched the Women’s 400m freestyle crown on day one of the 2011 FINA World Championships in Shanghai, China, on Sunday, July 24.
The session of the championship conducted the Women’s 400m freestyle final, where Pellegrini put in her best effort and took home the golden crown with an impressive time of 4 minutes and 01.97 seconds. After snagging the gold medal in the corresponding
meet, Pellegrini was pleased with her individual performance in the event.
Previously, Federica won two gold medals in the Women’s 200m and 400m freestyle finals respectively, at the 2009 edition of the event in Rome. In addition, she took home the golden crown in the 200m freestyle meet at the 2008 Olympic Games, in Beijing.
In the meantime, Rebecca Adlington of Great Britain earned the silver medal with a sterling time of 4 minutes and 04.01 seconds. While speaking about her performance, Adlington said, “I'm so pleased with that swim after this morning. I was quite down after
my heat as I didn't expect to swim so slowly but I picked myself up and that was so much more positive tonight.”
Camille Muffat of France captured the bronze medal with a time of 4 minutes and 04.06 seconds. Kylie Palmer of Australian finished fourth in 4 minutes and 04.62 seconds, while Lotte Friis of Denmark earned fifth place honours with a time of 4 minutes and
04.68 seconds.
Lauren Boyle of New Zealand wound up sixth in 4 minutes and 06.11 seconds, whereas, Kathryn Hoff of United States was placed seventh in a time of 4 minutes and 08.22 seconds. The eighth spot in the meet was secured by Melania Schmid Costa of Spain in 4 minutes
and 09.66 seconds.
Earlier in the day, Hwan Tae Park of Korea snared the gold medal in the Men’s 400m freestyle final with a fastest time of 3 minutes and 42.04 seconds, while Yang Sun of China finished second in 3 minutes and 43.24 seconds. Paul Biedermann of Germany rounded
out the top three in 3 minutes and 44.14 seconds.
