Federica Pellegrini excels in Women’s 200m freestyle semi-finals: Day five – European Championships
Federica Pellegrini of Italy excelled in the semi-finals of Women’s 200m freestyle on fifth day of the ongoing European Long Course Championships in Debrecen, Hungary on Friday, May 25.
The 23-year-old Pellegrini, who qualified into the semi-finals as fastest swimmer, live up to the expectations of her supporters by outperforming her challengers over the finishing wall for first position.
With her immaculate efforts, she remained prominently ahead of her competitors throughout the event and posted a time of 1 minute and 57.81 seconds.
Her finest qualification effort remained nearly half body length ahead of her strongest challenger and teammate, Alice Mizzau, who entered the playoff as second best finisher with the timing of 1 minute and 58.55 seconds.
Mizzau was chased by Patricia Castro Ortega of Spain, who was 0.40 seconds slower from her foregoing finisher and tapped the finishing blockade with an effort of 1 minute and 58.95 seconds for third position.
Fourth best qualification spot of the event was obtained by Silke Lippok, who was 0.12 seconds apart and posted a time of 1 minute and 59.07 seconds.
In the meantime, Laszlo Cseh demonstrated his stupendous efforts in the semi-finals of Men’s 100m butterfly.
The 26-year-old Cseh met expectations of his supporters and sustained his fastest qualification effort by clocking a time of 51.95 seconds.
His  astonishing effort remained 0.13 second faster from his subsequent swimmer, Milorad Cavic of Serbia, who finished second in the event with the timing of 52.08 seconds.
Cavic was traced by his team-member, Ivan Lendjer, who stayed 0.26 seconds apart and hit the finishing blockade with the timing of 52.34 seconds for third position.
Following that, the crowd witnessed gruelling efforts of Nikita Konovalov of Russia, who stayed just 0.04 seconds slower from his preceding swimmer and hit the wall with the timing of 52.38 seconds.
Fifth position of the 100m discipline was obtained by Rafael Munoz Perez of Spain, who was 0.10 second behind and produced a time of 52.48 seconds.
The session came to an end after the completion of all listed events while these finalists will race each other in the final round to secure gold medal.
