Federico Del Bonis ousts Bastian Knittel; moves into main draw – Mercedes Cup 2011
Kicking off play for the day at the 2011 Mercedes Cup, Argentine machinegun Federico Del Bonis, world No. 240 took on German Bastian Knittel. Despite being backed by the home crowd, an unlucky Knittel proved that TC Weissenhof,
Stuttgart Court is an unlucky venue for the locals. Taking less than an hour, Del Bonis destroyed the local
Considering the fact that Knittel had made his previous fixtures look as an easy meal, this one proved to be a shocker. His dreams of making it into the main draw were eventually snatched as the mighty Argentine overcame every
shot that the German played eventually leading to a sudden silence all across the court.
Kicking off with serving first, the German star could not manage more than a single ace throughout the first set where as Federico proved that clay was just his play area. Playing shocker forehands and one handed backhands, intensified
the agony that frustrated the home player and leading to a 1-0 lead in the first set. Regardless the fact that, the 20 year old, Del Bonis is less experience than Bastian Knittel, played as he had it all covered up. Winning 16 service points and 15 returners
he totalled 31 points in the first set including 2 whereas Bastian felt disoriented after the 2-6 loss in the first set.
The second set was more like a story of a little boy making his retarded fellow player learn how to hold a racket. Although the Argentine fans had their flags up, there was nothing but pity for the home player. Disgraced in the
first set, Knittel had now been smoked by the Azul born world No. 240. The second set started and ended just like that.
Federico ended the misery of the 27 year old in a straight set win 6-2, 6-0. Winning a total of 59 points against 31 of Bastian, the young boy defined the world magnificent. The match ended in just 57 minutes. Yes! 57 minutes.
But this one hour was the most painful hour for the German world No.184. Suffering a combination of extreme frustration, not able to win a single game in the second set, disgrace for losing on home ground and losing to a 20 year
old gave the German no choice but to appreciate the Argentine for his splendid performance.
Del Bonis now moves into the main draw where he will face either Mischa Zverev or Philipp Petzschner.
