Federico Del Bonis stuns Pavol Cervenak; moves into the semi-finals – Mercedes Cup 2011
Starting off with the first match of the 3rd round of Mercedes Cup 2011, Pavol Cervenak played against the mighty Argentine Federico Del Bonis. The match kicked off at 11:07 local time. The clay court at TC Weissenhof,
Stuttgart, Germany was levelled up as the fans rushed into to watch their respective players.
The Argentine had been in excellent form since the start of the event beating five players to reach this stage. His victories in the Mercedes Cup have been remarkable. Winning in straight sets in all 5 fixtures, the Argentine has
shown what a consistent player is whereas the Slovak international has been equally good with his matches. Both players entered the competition in the qualifying stage and brushed their way to the quarter-finals.
Del Bonis was trailing 0-1 in the head-to-head scores against the Slovak international as they started off on time for their second fixture against each other.
The match started off with Bonis serving for the opener. The match had a historic starting. Del Bonis blew away the Slovak as he ended the first set in no time. Winning the first three games including a breakpoint, the Argentine
went on a 3-0 lead immediately. Cervenak then won the only game of the set as Del Bonis went on bulldozing the Slovak with straight games to end the set score 6-1.
The devastation put on the Slovak was not enough for the Argentine. Federico was on fire as he bombed every shot he played. Winning a breakpoint from the first set, Del Bonis make it look like a piece of cake. Dominating the second
set as well, world No.240, Federico was now 2-0 up once again. Game 10 gave some hope to Cervenak as he cut the lead to 1-2 but the Argentine followed as he regained the lead making it 3-1.
Cervenak won the next game and the last for the match changing the score card to 2-3 for the second set. However, that was it. The crowd at TC Weissenhof court was stunned by the performance the Argentine international gave. Winning
the next three games including a breakpoint, Federico Del Bonis finished the set and the match in 71 minutes with a terrific forehand to qualify to the semis 6-1, 6-2. Statically, Federico won an amazing 60 points out of the total 99 against 39 of Cervenak.
Saving 100 percent of his break points, Federico won 35 service points and 25 returners to an super amazing win.
The 20-year-old had now had his revenge levelling the head-to-head score to 1-1. This has been, by far, the best win of the tour and for the young Del Bonis who is also the first player to enter the semi-final round of the Mercedes
Cup 2011.
