Federico Del Bonis upsets Sergiy Stakhovsky in the 2nd round – Mercedes Cup 2011
20-year-old Argentinean, Federico Del Bonis had an easy victory over Sergiy Stakhovsky and concluded the match in seventy seven minutes making the score 6-4, 6-3 win at the TC Weissenhof Court, Stuttgart, Germany.
World number forty five (Sergiy Stakhovsky) served first and opened the score card, 1-0. Serving second, Bonis gave away a break point which was availed by Stakhovsky at which point the score card read 2-0, soon after Stakhovsky gave a break point to Bonis’s advantage, thus Bonis cut the score to 2-1. Bonis served for the fourth game and managed to level the score board 2-2. He then went on to clench another break point and led the score board 3-2, he then steadily climbed the score card winning two games 5-2 in a row including a break point. Stakhovsky finally won a breather breakpoint on Bonis's serve and the next game to cut the lead to 5-4 but eventually lost as Bonis came up strong to win the last game and the set 6-4.
Stakhovsky opened the second set 1-0, Bonis followed as he won the next game levelling the score to 1- 1. Winning of their respective serves one by one, the scoreboard levelled again at 3-3 Stakhovsky served for 7th game but gave away a breakpoint and thus turning the tables against himself as Bonis wasted no time in availing the break point and lead the game 5-3. For the last and the final time Stakhovsky again gave away break point to Bonis; taking away the final game and the set. Bonis won the match 2-0.
Both the sets were largely dominated by Bonis and across the board; Argentinean served three aces, struck 3 double faults out of which two hit the net, was able to win fifty percent of his break points while Stakhovsky had barely thirty three percent and won sixty two percent of total service points along with a good forty seven percent of total return points won, thus, giving him a total of sixty six match points out of one hundred and twenty one as to his opponent who managed to attain a mere forty five percent of the match points.
He won 6-2, 6-3 in the first round of the Mercedes Cup against the world number 20, Florian Mayer and now moves on ahead to face either Victor Hanescu or Pavol Cervenak in the third round.
