Federico Delbonis edges Peter Torebko in the final qualifier – If Stockholm Open 2012
Seeded first in the qualifying event, Federico Delbonis of Argentina defeated Germany’s Peter Torebko in three sets 6-1, 6-7(2), 7-6(2) to move to the main draw of the If Stockholm Open in Sweden.
It was one-way traffic in the first set, as Delbonis allowed his German rival to win only a single game till the end, breaking him twice and capitalising on the double advantage to capture it 6-1.
The Argentinean contender bombarded three aces on Torebko and did not commit any double fault, maintaining a first serve percentage of 67. The 22-year-old had a decent conversion rate, grabbing 11 of the 14 first and five of the
seven second delivery points. Torebko performed terribly on his serve, as he managed to keep his first serve percentage at just 27 and lost three of the four points on them.
Torebko made a good start in the second set, winning four of the opening five games to race to a 4-1 lead. Though, Delbonis clawed his way back to level the proceedings at 5-5. The subsequent two games went with serve, taking the
score to 6-6 and forcing a tie-breaker. Torebko was unstoppable afterwards, playing brilliantly to win it 7-6(2).
The German participant banged in four aces but also made their half number of double faults in the second set. The 24-year-old saved two of the three break points he faced and converted the only one he received.
There was an intense battle in the decider, as neither of them dropped his serve till the end, equalising the score at 6-6 and taking it to second straight tie-breaker. This time, it was Delbonis who dropped just two points, claiming
it 7-6(2).
The Argentinean did splendidly well on the first serves, firing five aces and capturing 19 of the 21 points on them. The left-hander was off colour on the second ones, losing seven of the 17 points including four double faults.
However, the 6ft 3in tall did not allow his rival to create any break opportunity.
Delbonis is slated to meet Romania’s world number 178, Marius Copil, in the first round of the main draw.
