Federico Delbonis outlasts Tommy Robredo in the first round – German Tennis Championships 2012
Argentinean qualifier, Federico Delbonis, raised the standard of his game after losing the opener to rally past the world number 176, Tommy Robredo of Spain, 5-7, 6-0, 6-1 in the first round of the Bet-at-home Open – German Tennis
Championships in Hamburg on Monday. The Argentine contender needed an hour and 46 minutes to topple Robredo in a hard fought contest.
Robredo drew the first blood, nailing a break of serve in the opening game of the match and holding his following serve to gain a 2-0 lead. Although, the Argentinean contestant responded in a quickly and struck back to level the
score at 2-2. The next six games went with the serves to take the score to 5-5. The situation was getting close to a tie-breaker but Robredo snatched a break in the 11th and consolidated on it to win 7-5.
The Spanish player smacked one ace and 77 percent of the first serves, sealing 16 of the 24 points on them. The 30-year-old gave a better performance on the second ones, as he converted six of the seven of them into points.
Delbonis produced some unbelievably high quality tennis in the second set, dominating the proceedings throughout and breaking Robredo three times to hold six games in a row, winning it 6-0.
The Argentinean fired a couple of aces and committed one double fault in the second set. The 21-year-old’s conversion rate was exceptionally good, as he bagged seven of the eight first and five of the six second serve points. The
6ft 3in tall did not face any break point and converted three of the four he received.
After closing the second set easily, Delbonis made a similar start in the decider, winning opening three games to take a 3-0 lead. Robredo avoided some embarrassment this time by holding his serve in the fourth to open his account.
However, there was nothing more for the Spaniard later on, as he failed to win any more game and went down 1-6.
Delbonis will take on either Flavio Cipolla of Italy or Croatia’s Marin Cilic in the second round.
