Federico Delbonis shocks Adrian Ungur to enter main draw – Monte-Carlo Rolex Masters 2012
Argentinean contender, Federico Delbonis, upset the qualifying 10th seed, Adrian Ungur, with a breadstick at the Monte-Carlo Rolex Masters 2012 on Sunday. He manipulated a 6-4, 6-1 success against the world number 92 to cruise into the first round
at the Monte Carlo Country Club in Roquebrune-Cap-Martin, Monaco.
Delbonis dominated throughout the 66-minute battle and eventually carved out the victory in his first encounter against the Romanian. As a result, the Argentinean assertively advanced into the main draw at this ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) World
Tour Masters 1000 event.
The Argentinean youngster high-spiritedly entered the opening set and held his serve to take the initial lead. He maintained consistency in his game and wiped out his entire serves without facing any hindrance. Delbonis got the breakthrough in the last game
after cashing in the lone break opportunity and clinched the opener with a 6-4 score line.
Delbonis kept momentum floating into the following set and earned the coveted break in the second game to jump to a 3-0 lead. After Ungur held his serve in the fourth game, the Argentinean unleashed his skills again and pulled out the set with a breadstick.
He never faced any breakpoint and capitalised on two out of three break chances to prevail.
Summing up the world number 144 performance, Delbonis produced a lower first serve share of 57 per cent as opposed to the Romanian’s 63 per cent but impressively marked 22 out of 28 points on it.
Delbonis will confront the Spanish contestant, Pablo Andujar, in the opening round.
The qualifying second seed, Mikhail Kukushkin will accompany Delbonis in the main draw. He eased past the Bulgarian ace, Grigor Dimitrov, in straight sets to progress. The Kazakh got the better of Dimitrov in one hour and 33 minutes and avenged his loss
at the Miami Masters 1000 event earlier this circuit. He superbly warded off all eight breakpoints he faced and capitalised on two out of six break opportunities to formulate a 6-4, 7-5 score line. Kukushkin clobbered a lower first serve share of 64 per cent
as opposed to his rival’s 72 per cent but availed 34 out of 51 points on it.
