Federico Delbonis surprises Andrey Golubev in second round – Pekao Szczecin Open 2011
Argentinean Federico Delbonis warded off early resistance to register a straight set victory against sixth seeded Kazakh Federico Delbonis at the Pekao Szczecin Open 2011, an ATP Challenger Tour event held on the clay courts in Szczecin, Poland. He registered a 7-6(2), 6-4 success over the 24-year-old Kazakh to reach the quarter-finals on Wednesday.
20-year-old Argentinean outplayed the seeded Kazakh in one hour and thirty-eight minutes at the Wojska Polskiego in Poland. The world number 180, Delbonis earned a straight set victory on his first meeting against Kazakh, ranked seventy-seven places above him.
Both tennis stars played their best tennis in the opening set and bagged in entire serves. The Argentinean hit with angled shots and the seed held his serve with exquisite forehands from their respective box of tricks. The set went to a tie-breaker where Delbonis edged past the Kazakh to register a 7-6(2) score line.
He clobbered a higher first serve share of 74 percent as compared to Golubev’s 65 percent and earned a fascinating 77 percent win on it. In addition to this, Delbonis fended of all three breakpoints faced and had a good service point winning percentage of 69 percent. However, he failed to cash in on the only breakpoint chance he founded to his advantage and led the set to a tie-breaker.
The booming Argentinean kept momentum sailing into the final set and held his serve in the first game. He rolled the balls expertly onto the lines to keep his remaining serves until he got the first blood in the seventh game. Regardless of losing his serve in the proceeding game, Delbonis broke Golubev’s serve again in the last game to win the set with a 6-4 victory.
He manifested a slightly higher first serve share this time but registered a superb 79 percent win on it. The Argentinean further mustered the set by saving one out of two breakpoints faced and by capitalising on both breakpoint chances to her advantage.
Next challenge for Delbonis is the fourth seeded French Eric Prodon who eased past Dutch Thomas Schoorel in straight sets to reach this place.
World number 108, Prodon took one and half hour to dump the Dutchman, ranked eighteen places below him, on their first meeting. He warded off four out of five breakpoints came across and converted four out of nine breakpoint chances to his advantage to seal the deal with a 6-2, 7-5 score line.
