Federico Delbonis thrashes Adam Sanjurjo Hermida to enter main draw – Mutua Madrid Open 2012
World number 131, Federico Delbonis, did not face any difficulty in beating wild card entrant, Adam Sanjurjo Hermida of Spain, in straight sets in the final round of the qualifying draw at the Mutua Madrid Open in Spain on Sunday. The Argentinean took just 54 minutes to defeat Hermida 6-2, 6-2 and proceeded to the main round of this ATP World Tour 250 event.
Delbonis and Hermida did not lose their serves in the first four games of the opener, taking the score to 2-2. The Argentinean completely dominated the proceedings after that, as he did not drop even a single one, claiming a couple of breakthroughs to grab it 6-2.
The Azul, Argentina resident failed to hit an ace and committed two double faults but he was above average in all the other departments of the game. The 21-year-old banged in 65 percent of the first serves and pocketed 11 of the 13 points on them. He also gave an outstanding performance on the second deliveries and returns, securing five of the seven and four of the five points on them respectively.
Delbonis did not allow his opponent to even settle down in the second set, breaking him in the very first game and holding his following serve to attain a 2-0 lead. He struck again in the fifth and consolidated on it to stretch the advantage to 5-1. Hermida managed to win one more game but he could not resist any further, losing it 2-6.
The 6ft 3in tall, Delbonis, maintained a first serve percentage of 61, winning amazingly nine of the 11 points on them in the second set. He was error free on the second deliveries, converting all the seven of them into points. The Argentinean did not face even a single break point and converted both of the opportunities he received.
The world number 131 has a 4-5 win/loss record on the ATP World Tour in this season. The Argentinean gave his best performance at the VTR Open, where he not only qualified into the main draw but also reached the last eight, losing to Carlos Berlocq of Argentina. Excluding the Brasil Open, he has advanced to the main round of all the ATP World Tour events in this year. Last week, he lost to the then world number 32, Kevin Anderson, in two close sets 6-7(5), 6-7(5) in the round 32 at the Barcelona Open Banc Sabadell.
