Federico Delbonis upsets Thomaz Bellucci in opener at Gstaad – Tennis news
Argentinean rising star, Federico Delbonis, stunned the defending champion, Thomaz Bellucci, in straight sets at the Credit Agricole Suisse Open 2013 on Tuesday. He jolted down a 7-5, 7-6(2) success against the Brazilian star to progress into the round of
16 at this ATP World Tour 250 series event being held in Gstaad, Switzerland.
The in-form Argentine carried his last week’s form from the Bet at home Open in Hamburg into this clay court event and sent home the defending champion in the opening round. The players previously met each other at the VTR Open in Vina del Mar last season
and with this triumph, Delbonis improved to 2-0 lifetime in their FedEx ATP Head 2 Head series.
Delbonis made a convincing start in this match as he held his opening serve with ease and took the initial lead. The Argentine continued hitting precise shots down the line and slid his remaining serves. He got the breakthrough in the last game and clicked
the opener with a 7-5 win.
Standing at his career high rank of 65 in the Emirates Airways ATP World Tour Rankings, Delbonis carried his rhythm in the following set. He held his composure and bagged his entire serves. The Argentine failed to cash any of his break opportunities but
went berserk in the tie-breaker, eventually sealing the set with a 7-6(2) victory.
Summing up the 22-year-old’s abilities, Delbonis clobbered a better first serve share of 65 per cent as opposed to his rival’s 53 per cent and spectacularly marked 44 out of 49 points on it. He also showed impressive defensive skills as the Argentine fended
off all four breakpoints he faced. Delbonis converted one out of nine break chances to his advantage and earned the glory.
The Argentinean youngster is coming off from final showdown at the Bet at home Open German Tennis Championships held in Hamburg last week. His incredible run of form leads him to upset top seeded Roger Federer. In addition to this, the Argentine sought three
match points in the final against Italy’s Fabio Fognini.
Next in line for Delbonis is the Spanish contestant, Marcel Granollers.
