Question:

Fedex Invoice for customs tax (US to UK)?

I recently purchased an item from the US for delivery within the UK. However 2 weeks after receiving delivery, I had an invoice come through from FedEx asking for the HM Revenue and Customs charge that was applicable.

Has anyone else had this before whereby people have paid a shipping charge and still had to pay an import tax on top? If I just ignore it are they likely to chase it up or just write it off

  1. You have to pay it otherwise you will not get your goods.

Its a charge for HM customs to open and inspect your package and not from Fed Ex

  2. the only way it'll get waived is if it shouldn't have been charged in the first place or was overcharged because of incorrect information being given at point of declaration. like in M2's situation where the goods were replacement goods. if yours is a situation where this is the first time these goods have entered the uk, and they're not replacements under warranty, then yes you have to pay it and because fed ex are recovering a tax, not a simple fee of some sort, they can and willl chase you for it.

unfortunately i get asked this a lot. fed ex and other such companies tend to deliver first, without telling you about the charge so that they can chase you for the payment later. you're legally obliged to pay it if you accept the parcel. if you refuse it, they have to do the paperwork for a rejected import, not you.....they don't like doing that.....

  3. Fed Ex pay this to Customs and then invoice you, so its Fed Ex rather than Customs who will chase you for it.  But ask Fed Ex for some back up, to the charges, to make sure they have declared it correctly (ask them for your copy of the "Customs Entry")  They will have added their processing fees and hidden it behind "taxes"

  4. I would ask in here.

  5. that happened to me:

I looked online for the "customs" (everything is online so i typed in my country location and the item in my case computer software).

i found my product (computer software replaced by Microssoft)

and then downloaded that information/ printed it out.

    and sent in my appeal

i recieved a refund of my "tariff" only not the excessive delivery (i also tipped the delivery guy because it was not the delivery guys fault and no refund for that tip)..

so look it up and do the work..
