Fedor Emelianenko wins in Moscow; Vladimir Putin demonically booed – MMA News
The Russian Prime Minister, Vladimir Putin, was greeted with boos in a martial arts event that was held on November 20, 2011. The martial arts event was held at the Olympiysky Stadium, an indoor stadium located in Russia. The martial
arts bout was between Russian Fedor Emelianenko and American Jeff Monson.
The mixed martial arts legend, Emelianenko, who won the 2004 Pride Heavyweight Grand Prix in December 2004 at the PRIDE Shockwave event by beating Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira, won the bout over the American through a unanimous decision.
Emelianenko, the Russian mixed martial arts (MMA) fighter, nicknamed The Last Emperor, was in a good rhythm as he faced the American Monson. From June 2010 and July 2011, Emelianenko lost three consecutive fights. He first lost
to Fabricio Werdum in June 2010 at the Strikeforce event. He then lost to Antonio Silva in February 2011 at the Strikeforce event and his third loss was again at the Strikeforce event in July 2011 when he faced a loss by the hands of Dan Henderson.
Many speculated that Emelianenko should retire for his lack of performance. His win against Monson has broken the drought, which may have jeopardized his fighting career. Monson, nicknamed The Snowman, won the Intercontinental
Heavyweight Title at the Sprawl n Brawl 8 event when he defeated Paul Taylor by applying his rear naked choke.
The Russian was showing a new side of his fighting style against Monson. He was not using his mat wrestling style as he used to do before. This time, he was keeping a vertical base and using his power against Monson. The Russian
was giving striking blows to his opponent with his hand, fists and feet. He was more offensive but he was a bit defensive too. Maybe, his defensive nature was a psychological effect as he was not willing to lose his fourth fight in a row.
Emelianenko won the bout against Monson through a unanimous decision and regained some respect from the fans in Moscow. After the fight, Emelianenko said, “every new bout is a new story.”
As the fight ended, the Russian prime minister made his way into the fight ring to congratulate the winner. The spectators were not in the mood to welcome Putin. The Russian premier, who is set to be part of the Russian elections,
did not have a memorable appearance at the Olympiysky Stadium. Putin, who himself is a martial arts black belt, and has great interest in the sport, came to see the fight as Emelianenko is one of his favourite fighters. Putin too was taken by surprise by the
crowd reaction but composed himself swiftly after that he gave a brief speech, admiring Emelianenko’s win.
