Question:

Feedback on an accountant interview?

I went on an interview last week on Wednesday and I met the HR Manager, Assistant Controller and Controller. I think the management liked me allot and told me the next step would be to be interviewed with the CFO if I was a potential candidate, since they are still interviewing. I made sure I sent a thank you note to all three interviewers. Well got a call Friday and they want to schedule a second interview with the CFO for Monday as well as wanted my references. Today is Tuesday and I cannot make heads or tails on how the interview went?!? I could not feel out whether the CFO liked me or my answers and I feel I was very much prepared for the interview. His answers were all neutral and really did not give me much of a positive/negative sign of where I stood in the possible hiring process. What should I do at this point? Is there even any damage control at this point?

  1. That is the sign of a good interviewer!   Don't think negative at all.  He is holding his hand tight, not letting the candidate know at the time of the interview at all.

Many HR folks learn the hard way that if you are showing excitement at an interview, you risk hurting that candidate even more if they are not chosen.  He more than likely had other candidates to interview in addition to you so don't assume it went poorly!

Write the thank you note to him...and call the HR Manager to go over the interview and ask for a time frame on an answer.  And learn from every interview you have as you may be in the position to conduct them in your career.  Good luck to you!!
