Feeding Red Eared Sliders

Hey How often should i feed red eared sliders they were born in 2007 september i am taking care of them because a family friend was visiting new england and couldnt bring the turtles. she told me to feed them turtle pellets only once every 3 days 2 to each of them.

one is smaller then the other. they are under 1 1/2 inches.

how often should i feed them and what can i feed them with

  1. That is not a good diet, pellets are fine in moderation but they need meat to. Earthworms or feed fish work quite well. You really can't over feed them so I would say one earth worm each per week and pellets in between. or just keep the tank stocked with feed fish for them to eat as they please. You can also give them some aquatic plants, they eat a variety of those


  2. They will never grow on pellets (ceral ) alone!! , Maybe they  didn't know you feed feeder guppies and lettuce. Just drop a few guppies in the water and watch them swim and catch their dinner. They need the calcium from the fishes bones or they will be enimic and die off and have soft rotting shells.  You The water must be clean or once agin they will get fungus,respitatroty infections..

    good luck..Sliders, Cooters , painted ,map and yellow bellied are require the same care and feeding..I have two 36 yrs old and an 8 and 5 yr olds..

    I have had them in a 150gal pond for about 6 yrs now..
