Question:

Feeding Wild Horses In UK?

by  |  earlier

I was delighted when some wild mountain ponies came towards us when we stopped in our car today. They were very tame.By law, can anyone feed them? And if so, what can they have to eat? I'd worry if I thought I'd make them ill by feeding them something they shouldn't have. Thanks in advance for any advice.

  1. You should never feed them. It encourages them to hang around the roads where they will get killed, and encourages them to take food from nice people and not all people are nice and some will feed them bread with broken glass in (yes they will). Also they may bite or kick you, these are not pet horses and they will treat you with no respect. Please don't feed tame horses you see begging over a fence either, nasty people feed these glass too.

And remember they're not wild, they all belong to someone, would you like to have all sorts of strangers feeding your horse/dog/cat/child?

  2. Please, I beg you not to feed them.

It is not good for them to be tame. It is way better for them not to trust people and stay away. While most people will only mean well, there are also a lot of people out there that will harm them, just for some kind of weird joke.

Only last night, two ponies in Wales were stabbed to death, presumably for kicks.

  3. Im not very sure, but I wouldnt feed them just in case! and remember If they are 'wild' you could get hurt if you tried to feed them.(they might fight over the food).

    Hope this helps! :)

  4. Hi,not quite 100% but think Dartmoor Ponies they have asked people not to feed them.Horses love carrots & they will

    not hurt them.

  5. Greeeeat answer from Midnight, couldn't have put it better - good advice you should take it too or stick to my little pony!

  6. NO YOUR NOT SUPPOSE TO FEED THEM!!!!!  Their should be signs sayin that your not suppose to feed them. their use to finding their own food

  7. You're not supposed to feed them you usually see signs sparodically saying so - horses should not be encouraged to feed by humans as they come to depend on it and what happens when they are gone?

  8. I don't think you are allowed to but I don't know too much about the laws in the U.K.

  9. By law, no you can't. It's not good for these ponies to be tame as people will try and take advantage of them. It has been known for people to come up and steal them, and though they seem hand tame, they shouldn't be taken out of their natural, wild environment. Also, by coming up to the road they are risking getting run over by cars, 100s are killed yearly by this. Nice as it may seem to feed them, it's for their own good if you don't.

For domesticated horses, you can feed apples and carrots safely :-)

  10. There are about 1-2 ponies a day killed in the New Forest area from them being to close to the cars. Do NOT feed wild UK ponies please!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  11. feed them apples or watermelon horses love watermelon!
