Question:

Feeding a Kibble & BARF diet?

I've read that a few people feed kibble, say, for breakfast, and BARF for dinner. Is it safe to do that?

Cuz I've also heard that when you feed BARF, you shouldn't feed kibble with it.

So, would feeding kibble for breakfast and BARF for dinner be safe for a growing Giant breed puppy?

Or should you just stick to one or the other?

  1. what is BARF, I've never heard of that.

  2. Feeding raw food and kibble is not recommended.  But if you are, it would be better to do kibble at night, raw in the morning.  Kibble takes longer to digest than raw food, so over night should give the kibble enough time to make it's way through the dogs system before feeding raw.  If you feed both at once, it will mess with their digestive system as the raw tries to make its way through, with the kibble plodding along.

I'd recommend going raw all the way, and just raw.

  3. I, too, have found out that the general consensus says that it is safe to feed BARF AND kibble, so long as it is not in the same meal!

As far as being a giant breed, I don't know that.

  4. You CAN mix raw (no matter which method) and kibble, you just have to do it wisely.

Make sure you feed quality kibble, and slowly work up to raw dinners.  A lot of people say that your dog will just "take to" the raw diet, but that's not likely the case.  Any diet change can upset your canine.

The BEST thing about feeding a giant breed raw, is it's less likely to get bloat.

This is opinion here:  Throw raw feed on the ground, and let him eat like he were an actual animal.  No dish.  Elevated dishes actually have been led to increase the chance of bloat in some studies.  Let him "graze" his raw meals.  (or her :) )
