i care for a colony of feral cats, i feed them mainly a mixture of canned food and raw meat scrapes. i know about fillers, by-products, colourings and flavourings and all the other rubbish found in supermarket brands as well friskies and whiskas BUT i would like to know if it's okay to feed these brands if they are free off all the mentioned stuff? because it's not cheap to feed quality food like wellness if there're so many cats and i'm only 15 years old, having to feed and sterilize all of them out of my pocket money is no mean feat

  1. Your colony will do very well on the dry foods you mentioned. I used them to feed a colony of ferals near my home for several years and no one complained ;-))

  2. http://www.menufoods.com/recall/product_...

Here is a list of cat foods that have been recalled.  To save on money I'd say buy dry cat food to combine with meat scraps.  Because cats need the grains and proteins.

We use Purina because I've never seen it on a recall list and it's nice on the pocket too.

Good luck and I think that what you are doing is very admirable.

  3. Both Are Ok Just See Both, Which of Them Ur cat Likes Best and Use It :D:D Also Try Diff. Flavours And see Which of The flavours ur Cat likes best :D

  4. I'm sure its fine because I feed my kitten friskies and shes perfectly healthy.  the only problem is, she keeps asking for more wet food every 1-2 hours.  i guess its probably because its not that nutritional and made of mostly grains.

  5. Better then nothing.at least, they have choice

  6. I also feed feral cats, it is definitely NOT cheap!! Those brands should be fine, I always try to stock up when the brands I use go on sale and always look for coupons for any additional savings.

I truly admire you for all the effort you are putting in at such a young age - bless you and good luck to you!

  7. I do TNR too, and feed 9-Lives to them, an 18 lb bag lasts me about a month.  Since they're getting wild caught food as well, the 'junk' food is ok.  I buy what's available with the coupon discounts, and usually can get it for $9 a bag.  Just having food available regularly is good for them, in case they've not been able to find food at all. They can eat regularly which will keep them healthier to fight off infection and colds.  Feeding the highest quality diet isn't affordable at $17 a six pound bag.... you do the best you can.

I also put out meat scraps, cooked and not, for them and what they don't eat the possums do.  Make sure you're not getting raccoons coming to the food bowl or they'll drive off the cats and eat you out of house and home.  Arranging it so that the cat food is gone by 8pm allows the cats to all eat, yet keeps the bowl empty for when the raccoons come by.  Cats will adjust their schedule to yours if you stick to a regular feeding time.

But do keep a water bowl out 24/7 for them, a reliable water source is extremely important.

The heated dog water dish was one of the best investments I ever made.  Cats would come from 2 blocks away, walking in a straight line to the bowl, there'd be prints around the bowl as they tanked up with as much as they could hold, then a straight line walk 2 blocks back through the snow to return to their territory.  I've never seen cats eat snow, so an unfreezing water supply in winter was important.

  8. Well, both Friskies and Whiskas are low quality cat foods but you /are/ feeding feral cats so it's best that they are getting /something/ rather than nothing.
