Feeding question or should I say overfeeding question?

I took my daughter to daycare this morning at 9am and left (3) 8oz bottles for her (one extra just in case daddy didn't pick her up by 4). Well daddy was there at 3:45 and she had been given all three bottles?! Is it just me or is 24 oz in 7 hours a little excessive or better yet isn't almost 3 1/2 oz every hour excessive? Especially when she had 7 oz between 7:45 and 8:10 this morning?

Our daughter is 4 1/2 months old and weighs 14 lbs

  1. Please ignore what WI MOM said, she's ignorant.  Not everyone is as fortunate as her to stay at home with their kids.  I'm sure if it was up to all the mom's everyone would stay at home with their babies.

I think that is a lot to be feeding her.  Unless she is going thru a growth spurt, they tend to eat and sleep more when they are going thru them.  I actually think my 3 week old is going thru one now, she went from eating 3 ounces yesterday at every feeding to 5 ounces today.

  2. It doesn't seem that excessive to me, she might be going through a growth spurt. Especially since it's breastmilk, and that digests quicker than formula. My daughter ate quite a bit all at different periods, they do that.

BTW- take a deep breath and ignore those with a stepford super mom complex. It'll be alright. ;D

  3. It does seem like a lot, but perhaps she had a bad day? I always throw an extra container of formula in the bag just in case Emily ends up staying late by accident and every so often our day care provider will use it if Em is having a bad day. It helps to soothe her a bit and often helps her fall asleep, which is sometimes all she needs to feel better. I would ask your day care provider what happened. Was your daughter fussier than normal? Did she seem like she had a tummy ache? And so on...Good luck!

EDIT: You know, I'm a pretty laid back person, but I would need to be held back if I ever met any of these day care-haters in person. Just because we can't afford to be SAHM doesn't mean that we don't deserve to be parents. Go play in traffic you ignorant ***. K, I'm done...

  4. 8 oz is alot for a 4 1/2 month old.  How often does she eat?  She must have a healthy appetite.  How often do you nurse her when you are together?  I will say that it is really hard to over feed a breastfed baby.  Maybe she is having a growth spurt.

  5. I am breastfeeding too and that seems like an awful lot of milk for her to be drinking....Are you pumping enough to keep up with her milk intake for the period you are gone? My baby is 9 months old and drinks 3  5oz bottles while I am gone to work so that is from 6am until 3pm...she is 19 pounds and very healthy...You need to let your daycare mom know that breastfed babies don't drink breastmilk like formula fed babies do...they don't need as much while you are gone..esspecially if you are nursing her right when you pick her up and when you are home with her which I am sure you are...good luck

  6. Breastfeed and raise your own child full time. Problem solved.

  7. Take no notice of WI MOM.  The childcare-n***s are all out there.  The rest of us who have to workare easy targets them.  If they took up a hobby they might be more rounded individuals.

Anyway, my 5 month old is in exactly the same boat, eating me out of house and home this week and I dont worry about it for two reasons.  1.She goes through frequent growth spurts and always gets really hungry on those weeks. 2.  The daycare staff have great tricks for getting babies to eat!  Her weight sounds fine for her age, and generally a baby is considered to be over-feeding if it drinks 5 ounces more a day than 2.5oz per pound of their body weight.  So in your case with a 14lb baby the upper limit would be 35 ounces a day and overfeeding would be 40oz a day.  I always offer an extra ounce in her bottle just in case she wants it and if she leaves it behind I always know she's got a lovely happy belly!  Good luck and god bless! :)

  8. It seems like A LOT.. I read on kelly mom that at that age babies usually take 24oz in a whole day, it depends on their weight too but.. i'd ask the daycare person why she gave it to her.

Now she won't nurse as much & that results in supply issues & whatnot.

My son is 6months old & in 8hrs he takes 2 6oz bottles. Sometimes one. They feed him when he asks to be fed.

Oh & what do they say about pride? Tell me, tell me!! hehe

    God Bless

I don't care if my answer gets deleted

WI MOM- Stick your advice up your a55 you judgemental sad B*tch.

No one asked for your opinion. Get a life. Don't you have something to clean?

    =]

  9. Btw wi mom is a fool who is to lazy to get off her *** and get a job she just has her man do everything for her. So s***w her. She may be going through a growth spurt its normal but I would check out her daycare a little because they may just be popping a bottle into her mouth every time she fusses instead of checking if she needs a change or is bored. Watch how she is with you at home if she is eating more that she is just growing. Both of my kids are VERY big babys pounds and hight and they went through periods like that then they wouldent eat very much a few days later.

  10. That's a bottle every two hours which seems normal for a bottlefed baby to me.  It sounds like she takes nearly a full bottle at a time anyhow and they probably just dump out the ounce or two left over because your not supposed to save left over formula.  She probably didn't eat quite as much as you think she did, but its perfectly normal for a baby to eat every two ours, especially if she's going through a growthspurt.

  11. I know how you must feel. I just went back to work my self. A close family friend owns a daycare, and that is where my son is. Staying home is just not a choice.

But to your question, My son is almost 6months. he is 16lbs 2oz. he eats a 9oz in the morning and then a jar of baby food (A full jar) about 20-30min later. about 3hrs later he has a 4oz bottle, lunch time is a full jar again and another 4oz. i pick him up, he gets another 4oz. dinner time is a jar of food, and a 9oz bottle. and again before bed is a 9oz. he sleeps all night. The dr told me if he is hungry feed him. He is just now on formula, but also breastfed. i was told he is a healthy baby.

If anyone is going to tell you how to feed, or what to do with your child, tell them where to put it. sounds like you have a handle on things.
