Question:

Feelings on teenage gambling?

My english class is doing a debate on teenage gambling, and I need to ask people about how they feel about the subject. The type of gambling I chose was for charity and I have "Pro". I feel that as long as the stakes are small, you don't get in over your head, and it's for charity it should be ok. Is there an other info I should get?

  1. With all the guns, drugs and booze out there for teenagers to get involved in, I'd think most people would like for young people to take an interest in learning how to play texas hold 'em or black jack.  Especially for charity.  You don't hear about many drive by shootings at casinos.

  2. If you're playing low-stakes games for charity, then why not? It can be a good opportunity for people to, without burning themselves too badly, see for themselves that some of the casino games are definitely in the house's favor...and why gambling can be addictive if you aren't careful.

But I would research your area's laws on gaming. Make sure that, where you live, it's all right to have charity gambling events. Here, we can have charity "casino nights." But if that's not true in your part of the world, then you'll have to consider that in your debate.

  3. Play for charity?  Like in a charity card room where a percentage of the buy-ins and rakes go to a charity?  Teenagers can't gamble in those places.  I don't see how you could gamble for a charity otherwise, unless it's the "help us buy pot/beer" fund.

Teenagers are too dumb to gamble in a casino.  Then again so are most of the adults who go to them, but at least they've had a chance to learn better.  If they want to play poker at home, I see no problem.

BTW, table games at a casino and the lottery are a tax for people who are bad at math.
