My coach says it's cuz my shoes are small. I actually don't believe that, it fits well. How do I get it, how do you prevent it, and how can I make it heal faster? It looks as bad as other blisters I usually get, instead of look inflated and clear, it looks black.

  1. Well a foot blister is typically caused by friction. In that case the shoe size can either be too small or too large. You prevent it by having a properly sized shoe or by having a sock which sufficiently cushions the movement of the heel and shoe.

Generally you can go up 1/2 a shoe size and use a thicker sock like Thor Lo (definitely recommend) to avoid getting them.

If yours is looking dark it might be an infected blood blister. If the capillaries in under the epidermal layer burst the blister can fill with blood as opposed to serum. If that is the case it's often advised to sterilize a needle and drain the fluid. Clean it. Leave the skin. And apply antibiotic ointment until it's healed.

Sports therapists will put a product like New Skin, Second Skin or Blister Plaster over the blister and then cover it with Blister tape so you can keep playing.

  2. It's usually always the shoes. Either because they are too narrow or inflexible. I had toe blisters due to a tight shoe  - it was a basketball shoe which could have been the problem as well. I switched to my jogging shoe and no problems. Since I am just a recreational player, my jogging shoes are fine. But there is the risk of ankle injury if you play with jogging shoes and run from side to side a lot. That's because jogging shoes are designed for forward motion.

  3. Buy yourself a bunch of Thorlo socks. I used to get blisters and even had toe nails falling off, but I've had zero problems since switching to Thorlos about eight years ago.

  4. High performance socks make a big difference too. And change them often.

  5. Sounds like you need better socks for sure.. Check these out...
