Felder/ Grilli defeat Carry/ Hidalgo in quarterfinal – Ciudad de Guayaquil Challenger 2011
Second seeded team of Marcel Felder and Rodrigo Grilli defeated wildcard entrants Ecuadorian Diego Hidalgo with Argentinean Guillermo Carry in the doubles quarterfinal of the Ciudad de Guayaquil Challenger 2011.
At the classic clay courts of the Guayaquil Tennis Club in Guayaquil, Ecuador, the two squads clashed against each other and It took the second seeded team one hour and four minutes to get the best of wildcard entrants Ecuadorian Hidalgo along with Argentinean Carry in straight sets of 7-5, 6-1 on Wednesday the 23rd of November 2011.
Albeit both the sets were clogged by the second seeded team, they saw a good competition in the first and it took them a tiny bit longer to close out the primary set. Nonetheless serving first was Carry/ Hidalgo, they smashed two aces in the opening game and bagged an easy service game without much opposition. Following behind were the second seeded duo with a hold of serve.
Subsequently, in the following two games the players broke each other one after the other and the score had tied at two games each at the end of the fourth game. From there onwards the players matched a blow for a blow and kept bagging their respective serves.
As neither player wanted the other to take the lead, the cat and mouse chase carried well into the set. The set progressed on even terms and the scores kept tied for the next six games and each player had bagged five games each.
Although the match could’ve gone into a tiebreaker but instead, it tilted in favour of the second seeds. As they broke their adversaries in the eleventh game for the second time and then held their serve to smash a marvellous backhand winner, they clogged the opening set with a 7-5 victory to go one up in the match.
The second set of the match was a lopsided win for the second seeds and this time they were in no mood of the goose chase and dominated the set from the very first serve. Moreover, they had strengthened their defence and did not setup a single breakpoint chance for their opponents.
With an ostentatious win of eighty nine percent of their total service points along with an above average return, they clogged the second set with a near flawless victory. Nevertheless, inaugurating the set was Felder/ Grilli and they got off to a good start as they held their service game and then capitalized on a breakpoint in the second game to take a mini lead of three games is to love.
Carry/ Hidalgo made a return in the fourth game of the set with a hold of serve. The squads then held their respective serves for the following two games and the second seeded pair was now a game away from victory. As Felder/ Grilli held their serves for the last time, they potted their victory of the match.
Next up for the second seeded couple is the unseeded Argentinean pair of Guillermo Duran with Andres Molteni.
