Feliciano Lopez devastates Florian Mayer in quarter-final – Shanghai Rolex masters 2011
Spanish world No.28, Feliciano Lopez outclassed Florian Mayer, German world No.23, in the quarter-final battle of Shanghai Rolex Masters 2011 on Friday, 14thOctober as they fought out for an hour and nine minutes before
the Spaniard took off winning 6-2, 6-4, into the semi-final of the ATP Masters 1000 event.
Playing at Qizhong Forest Sports City Arena, Shanghai, China, blue circuits Mayer had no clue of what the Spaniard was capable of. Although the analysis before the match started had the pair standing at equal footing, Lopez shunned
the German world No.23 with his super consistent play.
Starting off with serving first, Lopez took off with the scoreboard winning game one, 1-0. Mayer served next, first match serve, and levelled up the scores with ease, 1-1. With a win each for the two, levelled up at 2-2, before
Lopez struck for the first time.
Serving out game 5, 3-2, the veteran Spaniard struck with a vicious down-the-liner to breaking the higher ranked German to lead the set 4-2. After a successful hold of serve in game seven, Lopez struck again with the second shocker,
breaking the world No.23 snatching away the set, 6-2, and led the match. Comparatively, Mayer had lost his tempo that he had in his previous match when he knocked out the top seed Rafael Nadal.
Commanding through the first set, Lopez took off with the second serving first and rolling down the scoreboard first, 1-0. Mayer came back strong and levelled up with mere difficulty. Rallying out games without breaking each other,
the two levelled up next at 2-2, 3-3 and then at 4-4, before the game twisted.
Winning away game 9 with a triple game point, Lopez rolled up his sleeves and was rocketing through the final games. Unable to counter the Spaniards fierce offence, Mayer broke down in game 10 losing the final game with a double
breakpoint, 4-6.
The Spaniard will now face the “Mighty Wall”, David Ferrer in the semis of the Shanghai Rolex Masters 2011.
Predictably, Lopez has been more of an aggressive player in this event with a 6-4 lead in his head-to-head with his higher ranked compatriot; however, the world No.5 has won all of his main round matches with marvellous comebacks.
The match scheduled on the 15th of October is definitely going to be an exciting and enthralling treat for fans all over.
