Feliciano Lopez drags down Gael Monfils in second round - BNP Paribas Masters 2011
Ranked world No.21, Feliciano Lopez, Spaniard, overwhelmed his 2nd round competitor of the BNP Paribas Masters 2011 on Wednesday, 9th November, Gael Monfils, French world No.10 as the two clashed out for an
hour and 21 minutes at Palais Omnisports de Paris-Bercy, Paris, France on indoor hard courts. Lopez won the tie in straight sets 6-3, 6-4, to make his walk to the third round of the event.
Firing up first, Lopez, Spaniard, went on to serving the match opener and his first serve of the match, bagging the game and rolling down the scoreboard, 1-0. Monfils, Frenchman, followed with a winner to even up the scores and
saving a breakpoint, 1-1.
Lighting up the match, Lopez served his second game, saving a breakpoint and leading the scoreboard, 2-1. Game four, Monfils served and went down as the world No.21 capitalized and bagged his second win in a row to lead the set,
3-1.
Extending his lead, the 30-year-old veteran mustered away with his fourth win of the set, 4-1, switching back the serve to the higher ranked Frenchman. Monfils did cut the lead, however, was unable to break back and level up any
soon, 4-2.
Maintaining his lead, Lopez finally finished off the set, serving out game nine, 6-3, to lead the match, 1-0. Struggling since his return from injury, the Frenchman had trouble getting back to his form.
Moving on with the second set, Monfils got away serving away the second set opener with a triple game point winner, 1-1, followed by the Spaniard serving out his first serve of the set, game 2, to level up the scores at 1-1.
Continuing to bag games off respective serves, the two levelled up at 2-2 and on 3-3 before the world No.21 made his move. Evening up the scores at 3-3, the veteran sneaked away with a breakpoint with a double breakpoint winner
and let the scores, 4-3.
Lopez extended his lead as he serve out game eight, 5-3, and was left out with just one more game to end the set and the match. Monfils, serving out game nine, did cut the lead, yet was unable to level up the scores to save the
match.
Ending the match with a 6-4 second set win, Spaniard paved his way into the third round of the ATP World Tour Masters 1000 event with a straight set win over the world No.10. The veteran now moves on to play the mighty American
26-year-old, John Isner, to compete for the quarter-final seat of BNP Paribas Masters 2011.
