Feliciano Lopez ousts Bernard Tomic to reach semis – BMW Open 2012
Second seed, Feliciano Lopez, dumped the Australian number one, Bernard Tomic, in straight sets at the BMW Open 2012 on Friday. He manifested a 6-4, 6-2 victory against the 19-year-old to power into the final four at this ATP (Association
of Tennis Professionals) clay court tournament taking place in Munich, Germany.
The left-handed Spaniard needed less than an hour to outclass Tomic in their second encounter. After bagging this match, Lopez not only avenged his loss at the Australian Open last season but also levelled the FedEx ATP Head 2
Head series by 1-1 against the world number 33.
"I'm so happy to win the way I did today. It's a good result," Lopez jubilantly reflected after winning the match. "I have a lot of respect for him because he's one of the most talented players in the game. He has the perfect game
to beat me, because he has good hands and a good return. So I'm very happy with my win today."
Lopez convincingly entered this ATP World Tour 250 series event and held his opening serve to level the scores at 1-1. He then swiped in remaining serves without facing any real trouble and cashed in the lone break chance in the
seventh game to pull out the opener with a 6-4 score line.
Ranked 16th in the South African Airways ATP World Tour Rankings, Lopez kept momentum sailing into the follow-up set. After Tomic held his serve in the third game, the Spaniard unleashed barrage of groundstrokes to stroke
out the proceeding five games in a row. He again plucked his entire serves without facing any breakpoint and capitalised on two out of six break opportunities to earn the limelight.
The 30-year-old will square off against the fourth seed, Philipp Kohlschreiber.
"We've played a few times, on both clay and hard courts. It's always close with him," said the Spaniard about his next match-up. "He's a great player and will be at home. I hope to have my chances."
The seeded German crushed the Australian qualifier, Marinko Matosevic, with a bagel to set-up this clash. He was broken down once but cashed in four out of 10 break chances to register a 6-0, 7-6(5) success.
