Feliciano Lopez upsets Guillermo Garcia-Lopez in the second round at Barcelona Open
Spanish tennis player Feliciano Lopez recovered from a set down to score an upset over fellow countryman Guillermo Garcia-Lopez in his second round match at the 2011 Barcelona Open Banc Sabadell. The Spanish World Number 42 Feliciano Lopez defeated World Number 26 Guillermo Garcia-Lopez in three sets 6-7(2), 6-3, 6-4, surprising spectators who expected an easy win for Garcia-Lopez. The match lasted just a little over two hours and five minutes.
Despite the fact that Guillermo Garcia-Lopez is the higher ranked player, he seemed to struggle from the first set. The player scored only once ace, while his compatriot Feliciano Lopez managed an impressive seven in the first set alone. Both players saved all of their break points, while Lopez committed two double faults. Feliciano Lopez fought hard against his opponent, forcing the set into a tie-breaking game. Garcia-Lopez barely scraped through the first set, but managed to take 57 per cent of the points to win it 7-6(2).
This obviously put Feliciano Lopez at a disadvantage in the match, but he seemed determined to fight against it. The player scored four aces in the second round of the match, and committed no double faults. He was also successful in breaking Garcia-Lopez once, and went on to win a whopping 62 per cent of the total points played. He won the set 6-3. The score-line at this point in the match was 6-7(2), 6-3 to Feliciano Lopez.
Guillermo Garcia-Lopez tried desperately to recover in the third set of the match, scoring two aces and breaking Feliciano Lopez once. However, his efforts were unsuccessful, as his opponent also scored two aces and broke him twice. Feliciano Lopez won the match after taking one point more than Garcia-Lopez in the last set, setting up a 6-72), 6-3, 6-4 score-line in his second round. The two players now have a balanced head-to-head record of 3 all, after this match.
Feliciano Lopez will be facing Japanese Number 1 Kei Nishikori in the third round of the 2011 Barcelona Open Banc Sabadell tomorrow.
