Felip Paulino’s debut helps Kansas City Royals defeat Los Angeles Angels 2-0 – MLB Update
The Kansas City Royals overruled the Los Angeles Angels in second-straight game 2-0 at Kauffman Stadium on Wednesday, June 1 to take the series 2-1.
Felipe Paulino, making his second appearance and first start for the Royals, made an impressive debut, allowing just four hits and striking-out four batters over five innings. The 27-year-old Dominican made his first appearance against the Angels, keeping
them under great pressure right from the first inning.
He did not let the Angels’ feel as they are playing a relatively new pitcher in Kansas. The Angels were looking to create some runs when Paulino handed the ball to reliever Greg Holland, but their plan did not work as Holland along with Everett Teaford,
Louis Coleman, and closer Tim Collins tossed some remarkable pitching.
Holland threw two innings, allowed just two hits and struck-out six batters to help the later pitchers gain their momentum. Teaford tossed just three pitches and consumed one hit while Coleman allowed a walk on his five pitches before Collins landed the
plate. He completely outclassed the opposition pitching one inning without any score, walk and hit.
The Angels’ also had an impressive pitching from their starter Tyler Chatwood, who scattered just five scoreless hits and struck-out two batters over seven innings. He threw 64 strikes of 100 pitches with 3.64 ERA.
As soon as closer Scott Downs, who had and impressive seven saves this season, replaced Chatwood in the ninth inning, the Royals’ Billy Butler launched a dazzling 401-feet long two-run homer to take his team to their 25th win of the season.
"It's tough to tell here with home runs because we don't have a yellow line and the seats are right there and it bounces back a lot," Butler said. "He took a second to signal it when he returned. I didn't think he was going to signal."
The Royals’ manager Ned Yost could not restrict explaining the situation that happened before homer.
Yost said, "I ran out and told umpire Fieldin Culbreth, 'I've got no stinking idea where that ball hit. He said, 'Don't worry about it. We are going to do the right thing right now because I am not really sure either. We'll go check it.' The replay showed
it did make it over that fence and bounced back."
Despite throwing nine strikes of 17 pitches over his innings, Downs failed to maintain his form and gave way a game-losing homer. Now the Angels have to play their next series against the team that has the most home-runs in this season. The Yankees’ 82 homers
have forced the Angels’ manager Mike Scioscia to land his best pitching depth on Friday, June 3.
