Felip Peliwo battles past Enzo Couacaud into the semi-finals – Boys’ Singles: Wimbledon 2012
Fourth seed, Filip Peliwo of Canada, survived the thrashing in the second set and bounced back to overcome French player, Enzo Couacaud, 6-4, 1-6, 6-3 in the quarter-finals of the Boys’ Singles event at the Wimbledon Championships
on Thursday.
Couacaud drew the first blood, as he broke the Canadian in the very first game of the match and held his following serve to gain a 2-0 lead. Peliwo hit back in the sixth one to equalise the proceedings at 3-3. Serving to stay in
the set at 4-5, Couacaud could not hold his serve and went down 4-6.
Peliwo fired a couple of aces and committed three double faults, putting in 51 percent of the first serves and clinching 13 of the 18 points on them. His performance on the second deliveries was poor, as he was able to win just
eight of the 17 points. Peliwo capitalised on both break points he received and saved four of the five he faced in the opener.
The Canadian player and his French rival began by winning their opening serves in the second set to even out the score at 1-1. Couacaud completely dominated the events after that, as he hit winner after winner to grab five consecutive
games, snatching three breaks and making the most of them to triumph 6-1.
Couacaud hit two aces and 65 percent of the first deliveries, converting 10 of the 13 of them into points in the second set. He approached net seven times and won the point on five of those occasions. The French contestant banged
in 10 winners compared to eight by his opponent.
In contrast to the opening two sets, the third one was started in a stable manner by both players, as they did not drop their serve in the first four games to take the score to 2-2. Peliwo claimed breakthrough in the fifth but
Couacaud struck back immediately to level it at 3-3. The Canadian made the final strike in the 10th game to capture it 6-4.
Peliwo won a total of 16 of the 35 receiving points in the entire match. He pounded 12 winners and made just three unforced errors. It took Peliwo an hour and 38 minutes to oust his French opponent from the tournament.
The Canadian is slated to meet the eighth seed, Mitchell Krueger of USA, in the semi-finals. Krueger stunned the second seed, Kimmer Coppejans, in the quarters.
