Canadian Filip Peliwo named junior male player of the year – Tennis News
Canada’s Filip Peliwo has been given junior male player of the year award for his consistently incredible performance throughout the season.
The Canadian national reached the title matches of junior category at all the four Grand Slams in 2012. The 18-year-old went down in the finals of Australian Open and French Open but succeeded in grabbing the Wimbledon and US Open crowns.
Men’s world number one, Novak Djokovic; and third highest ranked women in the world, Serena Williams, also claimed the player of the year award in their respective categories. Taylor Townsend was selected as the junior female player of the year.
Peliwo shared that he expected to get the award for the last three months, when he won the US Open in September. However, International Tennis Federation made the official announcement on Tuesday.
The Canadian stated in an interview, “I expected it to happen after I finished the U.S. Open (in September). It feels great just to be finally recognized officially as the world No. 1 junior.”
Peliwo became the first player to reach the final of all four Grand Slams in a single season in the last 28 years. He is also the first player from his country to hold two Major titles at the same time. However, he could not get the honour of being first
ever Grand Slam winner of Canada, as his country’s highest ranked female junior player, Genie Bouchard, won Wimbledon title a day earlier than him.
The Canadian went on to say, “I managed to be able to bring my game up in the big tournaments and the grand slams, even when I wasn’t playing my best. I found ways to win matches I was down in. Everything came together, whether it was my game, my mental
strength, my consistency, the physical part. Hopefully I’ll be able to keep that going.”
Canada’s tennis has witnessed huge achievements by its players recently. Country’s highest ranked male player in singles, Milos Raonic, rose to 13thposition in the world. Its history’s best doubles player, Daniel Nestor, remained number one in the world
for major part of the season.
