Felipe Ferreira Lima dominates Men’s 100m breast-stroke semi-finals: Day two–2011 Jose Finkel Trophy
Felipe Ferreira Lima of FIAT/MINAS dominated the Men’s 100m breast-stroke semi-finals and occupied the fastest berth into the final round on the second day of the 2011 Jose Finkel Trophy on August 31, in Belo Horizonte, Brazil.
The 26-year-old Ferreira Lima showered his expertise in the double lap breast-stroke swim to secure the fastest qualification spot by submitting a time of 1 minute and 01.60 seconds. With his thrilling performance, Lima remained 3.02 seconds slower than
the world record of 58.58 seconds, set by Brenton Rickard of Australia at the 2009 Rome World Championships.
The fastest qualifying swimmer was followed by Joao Luiz Gomes Junior of ECP/SABESP, who remained just 0.30 seconds behind Lima and entered the final with a second fastest qualification time of 1 minute and 01.90 seconds. Subsequently, the 25-year-old athlete
overwhelmed the effort of Felipe Alves Franca Silva by staying 0.11 seconds ahead of him. Silva earned the third fastest qualification spot of the swim, by submitting a time of 1 minute and 02.01 seconds to enter the final round.
Junior had a comparatively quick start to his strongest competitors, whereas, he was the first one to complete first-half of the swim, while Silva and Lima remained strong for the second and third fastest spots. Nevertheless, in the second round, Lima geared
up his swim and occupied the fastest seat into the final, whereas, Junior and Silva followed him on the finishing wall for second and third fastest finishes, respectively.
In the meantime, Silva’s team-member, Raphael Oliveira Rodrigues joined him on the concluding wall with a fourth fastest timing of 1 minute and 02.09 seconds. Rodrigues was chased by his following swimmer, Henrique Marques Barbosa of CRF/RJ, who remained
only 0.39 seconds slower than him and ended his swim in a time of 1 minute and 02.48 seconds for fifth qualification position.
Moments later, Barbosa’s team-mate, Tales Rocha Cerdeira claimed sixth finest qualification spot of the event, as he remained only 0.05 seconds behind and reported in a time of 1 minute and 02.53 seconds. Cerdeira was traced by Eduardo Aquiles Fischer of
FIAT/MINAS, who stayed just 0.04 seconds behind him and posted a seventh fastest time of 1 minute and 02.57 seconds. The final qualification spot was secured by Angelito Cassandra of ECP/SABESP, who ended his swim in eighth place, by clocking a time of 1 minute
and 02.89 seconds.
Furthermore, the crowd gave a standing ovation to the top-eight finalists of the swim. The arena went wild with their gruelling efforts, whereas, these swimmers will meet with each other in the final round.
