Felipe Massa may still have hopes of saving his race seat with Ferrari for 2013 – Formula 1 news
Felipe Massa has said that he understands what he needs to do in order to retain his race seat with Ferrari for the 2013 season.
The Brazilian desperately wants to salvage his Ferrari drive and his team principal Stefano Domenicali has said that Massa understands fully what is required of him to retain it.
Massa has been struggling with form off late and he has been under tremendous pressure as his race seat has been in danger for some time now. Ferrari have already revealed that they were in talks with Red Bull driver Mark Webber in order to give him a Ferrari
race seat to replace Massa for the 2013 season. Webber chose to stick with his team Red Bull and renewed another year contract with them.
This has changed a few things at Ferrari admitted by Domenicali himself, who said that the team will have to rethink their options now that the Aussie has decided to stay on with Red Bull.
Massa on the other hand understood from the start of the season that he is walking on thin ice and needs to perform badly in order to do justice to his position in the team.
The Brazilian still has had a poor and disappointing season with flashes of relative success. Massa is currently 139 points behind his teammate and the leader of the current standings Fernando Alonso.
Domenicali’s statement that Massa knows what he needs to do to retain his seat is a positive sign for the Brazilian as it gives him a glimpse of hope that he can still secure his race seat with the team if he can start performing once the season resumes
after the summer break.
“I think Felipe knows [what he has to do],” said Domenicali.
“He needs to maximise the performance that he can because we need his capabilities behind the wheel. We need points to try to attack first place in the constructors' championship, and also to take away points from the other drivers in the drivers' championship.
He knows that he has in front of him some very important races for him as a driver and also as a team member for Ferrari,” he added.
