Felipe Massa says career could end if he is unable to get a competitive race seat for 2013
Felipe Massa has said that he will not be able to stay in Formula 1 next year if he loses out on a Ferrari seat and does not find a competitive race seat.
Massa’s race seat with Ferrari for the 2013 season looks to be in serious jeopardy and it seems likely that he will be replaced after the end of this season.
The Brazilian has been struggling for some time now and has not been able to perform to his potential off late. Ferrari President Luca di Montezemolo had warned Massa prior to the season that if he is not able to perform in the current season he will lose
out on his race seat.
After a poor first half of the season, it is clear that the Brazilian has not done enough to secure his position with the team, although in recent statements he has said that he feels his future is in his hands and he can save it by performing and coming
up with consistent performances.
Ferrari on the other hand have been in talks with several drivers for their 2013 seat the most high profile so far has been with Mark Webber who recently renewed his contract with Red Bull ending the speculations that the Aussie will replace Massa.
Ferrari admitted that now that Webber has decided to stay on with Red Bull the team will have to rethink its driver plans for 2013.
“What I want is to stay in F1, but I want to stay in F1 with a possibility to race, not just to participate,” said Massa. “I'm interested in racing. I think if for whatever reason I don't have the chance to stay at Ferrari I will try to find a direction
to race.”
“If I don't find a direction to race, because it's maybe only smalls teams available, then I'm not interested. Having a clean race,” he said when asked how he could help Alonso. “I'm sure having a clean race would help a lot, and not just him, but myself
and the team. That's the only thing. In the last race I had a good pace.”
