Felipe Massa says he is confident of Ferrari backing him up – Formula 1 news
Felipe Massa believes he has the backing of his team even though he is under tremendous pressure to perform.
Massa has had a troublesome time since his life and career threatening accident in 2009. The accident left Massa out of the remainder of the season. The Brazilian returned in 2010 but could not match the same pace as he showed during the 2008 season where
he almost won Drivers’ championship.
Ferrari had remained optimistic and supported him throughout his lean patch but so far Massa has not shown any improvement and has not been able to come up with results that can be respected even as a supporting role to Fernando Alonso his team-mate who
seems to be carrying the team along almost single-handedly.
Ferrari President warned Massa prior to the 2012 season and said that he should improve and come up with the desired results or else face losing out on his race seat with the team in 2013. It seems very likely now that Massa will be replaced even though
recent rumours of his replacement have led Ferrari to show some support for the Brazilian, it is imminent that he will be replaced at the end of the season if not before.
Massa however has said that the feels that the team will back him up and hopes that he will be able to improve on his performances to keep his race seat intact for 2013.
“Absolutely, yes, I feel the whole team stands by me,” he told the Ferrari website. “Obviously, they are not happy with the results and neither am I: we all want is to get out of this and return to normal. It's possible and for sure it's what I want and
I know that with the team's help we will manage it.”
“As for myself, I don't feel in any way different to the way I was before that weekend. how can one explain the fact that, at the race start, I am probably still one of the best drivers and I am not the sort to hold back when it comes to overtaking?” he
added.
It will be interesting to see if Ferrari waits for the season to end or replace him prior to that.
